Cooking is fun.
You get to make something to eat.
When it's done in the classroom,
It's a extra special treat.
There is so much learning going on when children are involved in cooking - math, fine motor, reading, to name a few. By cooking, I mean putting food together in a way that is safe, and can be done in the classroom.
We have an A-Z book of recipes so the children can look at what they've made and what they'll be making the following week. Children are given the opportunity to suggest something beginning with...the next letter of the alphabet...that we can make (and it's interesting to hear their ideas).
Yes, it's like having a letter of the week. But we don't do anything else with the letter - gone are the days of coloring the letter, cutting it out and decorating it. There were benefits to doing that - mostly fine motor. But it was very teacher directed. Cooking is directed by the recipe, not by the teacher.
