Ants in the Oats

During recess, a group of children had discovered ants in the date tree and on the ground. 

 While making porridge, one of the packets of oats had ants in it. I put the oats into containers for the children to watch the ants.

 Some of them used spoons to try to scoop the ants from one container into another.

 They wanted to collect ants from the playground to keep.

 Observation, fine motor skills, wonderings.

Yarn Trap

The yarn was used to make a trap.  It was tied to a picture frame and a basket. Each was positioned on shelves across from one another.  The children had to go "under" the trap to get to the carpet for whole class time. There was a lot of sharing of ideas, problem solving, and use of the positional language "over" and "under" and "around".
